Bequest: A Gift for the Future

Make a bequest for future generations
Each of us wants to leave a gift for future generations. Your bequest to the Michigan Land Use Institute accomplishes a greater good — the assurance that Michigan's incredible beauty will endure for the wonder and awe of children for years to come. It is your personal legacy — a triumph of planning over the destruction of lands we treasure.

It's easy to do
There are several ways you can make provisions for the future of this important work:

  1. Include a gift to the Michigan land Use Institute in your will.
  2. Name the Michigan Land Use Institute as the beneficiary of a trust or other vehicle such as your retirement plan, insurance policy or bank account.

All it takes is a call to your attorney or an addition to your will. And of course you may change or enhance your choices at any time.

Options for your bequest to the Institute
You can select from the following options:

  • A specific dollar amount.
  • A percentage of your estate's value.
  • Designation of all or part of your life insurance or retirement plan proceeds.

Sample language for your will
We urge you to consult your attorney in preparing your will. The following language may be helpful in providing a bequest to the Michigan Land Use Institute:

"I give, devise, bequeath to the Michigan land Use Institute, a nonprofit corporation organized and existing under the laws of Michigan, and with current business address of , 148 E. Front St., Suite 301 Traverse City MI, 49684-5725_______ (specific dollar amount, property, or percentage) to be used for its general purposes for conservation and citizen advocacy."

Putting your gifts to work
Your support is crucial to our ability to champion Smart Growth—the best way to build our economy and support our quality of life, and protect our environment. Here are some highlights from our recent work:
Played a major role in building record participation for The Grand Vision project and maximum support from officials throughout the six-county Grand Traverse region.
Launched an ambitious new program to convince officials that moving from coal power to green power is, by far, Michigan’s best environmental and economic bet.
Grew our Taste the Local Difference campaign with more retailers, growers, partners, sponsors, schools—and innovative new business services.
Installed a Web-based Farm and Food Exchange that networks food growers with sellers, and farmland owners with new farmers.
Produced a sold out “farm to school” conference that triggered strong interest in Lansing around changing rules that make serving local food in public schools difficult.
Expanded our communications to include more video and multi-media presentations.
